When you think of Kanki Japanese House of Steaks and Sushi – a Triangle staple since 1972 – your mind might go straight to the excitement and flair of hibachi chefs, entertainingly crafting a meal before your eyes. (Raise your hand if the onion volcano is your favorite!)
Indeed, hibachi is a large part of the restaurant – the Durham location, opened in 2001, has 20 tables that can serve up to 200 guests. It’s popularity is in part due to economics: You essentially order a multi-course meal, with a salad, soup, rice, veggies and sauces* in addition to your main entrée, for about $20 for dinner for one or $40 for dinner for two – an enticing offer, compounded by the tasty flavors and fun performance. Also known as a “Japanese pizza,” a term coined by Kanki Director of Operations Gee Dararouksa, this seafood pancake with egg, cabbage, green onions, squid, shrimp and crab comes topped with mayonnaise, a sweet sauce and bonito flakes.

In addition to the dishes, expertly prepared under the leadership of corporate executive chef Alex Cordova, Durham’s Kanki has recently undergone a massive overhaul in its design and décor, which should be nearing completion in the next couple of weeks. A new entryway, hostess stand, fresh artwork, booth seating and high tables, sushi bar with brightly illuminated backsplash and a patio have all been added to the restaurant, located just off 15-501 on Mt.
