Weekend at a Glance: Fashion, Fun Run and Fragments

Meet the Author Tea: Diane Chamberlain – Thursday, 3:30-5 p.m. – The Chapel Hill Public Library will host the best-selling author of 24 novels. “Pretending to Dance,” her newest work, was released in Oct. 2015 and is set in N.C.

Member Appreciation Night – Thursday, 5:30-7:30 p.m. – Coastal Federal Credit Union will offer a Hickory Tavern Taco Bar, live music and wine and beer to celebrate the opening of its Carrboro location.

FRAGMENTS: Found & Formed – Thursday, 6-8 p.m. – Join Charron Andrews, Susan Parrish and Carol Retsch-Bogart at the FRANK art gallery for an artist’s talk highlighting their ideas and goals for using found materials in their art.

Fridays on the Front Porch – Friday, 5-8 p.m. – Kick-start the weekend on the Carolina Inn lawn with featured performer Acoustic Manner. Also featured will be food trucks Porchetta and Stuft.

Cirque du Plaza – Friday, 6-9 p.m. – Join Live and Local’s free Music and Art Series at The Plaza at 140 West Franklin for a convivial carnival of puppeteers, Down to Earth Aerials, hula hooping, face painting, balloon twisting and more.

Freight Train Blues Concert Series – Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – BYOBlanket (and chair) to the Carrboro Town Commons to listen to Cool John Ferguson and Guitar Lightnin’ Lee. No outside alcohol; beer and food will be sold at the event.

Color the Hill 4K Fun Run – Saturday, 9:30 a.m.- A ticket to this rainbow race that begins at UNC Cross Country Course at Finley Fields includes a t-shirt, sunglasses, race number, color packet and donation to local charities. Fun for the whole family, all ages and skill levels are welcome, even to register on the day of the race.

Display Gardens Tour – Saturday, 10-11 a.m. Learn about native wildflowers, terrains and habitats during a 60-minute guided tour of the N.C. Botanical Garden.

Neighborhood Block Party – Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. – The opening week festivities continue at the Carrboro location of Coastal Federal Credit Union with face painting and glitter tattoo artists, The Pig catering and giveaways.

Southern Season Wine & Food Festival – Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. – Chapel Hills location will feature more than 40 different premium wines for tasting and more than a dozen food vendors.

Movies @ The Library – Saturday, 2:30-4:45 p.m. – Join fellow fans at the Chapel Hill Public Library for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

History, Mystery and BBQ – Saturday, 4-7 p.m. – Fill up on delicious food and drink from Hillsborough BBQ Company, Mystery Brewing Company and Bona Fide Sandwich Co. at the free admission Orange County Historical Museum celebration of Orange County history. Enjoy an open-mic history storytelling hour, a raffle and a mini live auction. Twenty percent of food and drink sales and auction will go directly to the museum.

Horseshoe in the Dogwood Garden Open House – Sunday, 12:30-4 p.m. – Rain or shine, stroll around these English Country Gardens featuring an award-winning collection of iris, peonies, perennials and shrubbery. Tickets can be purchased at the Hillsborough Visitor’s Center or at the gate for exact cash.

Boss of the Toss Cornhole Tournament – Sunday, 1-4 p.m. – Proceeds from the second year’s double elimination tournament competition will be donated to Sam’s Wish Fund. Enjoy food trucks and music; prizes and bragging rights are up for grabs.

Walking on a Dream – Sunday, 3-6 p.m. – With stories and commentary from four powerful women, clothing from nine local boutiques and deputies strutting as models, Rishi Salon & Spa Benefit Fashion Show is a must-see. The show will include a DJ, food trucks, coffee, a sponsor expo, a silent auction and a grand live-band finale.

Southern Village Summer Outdoor Concert Series – Sunday, 6-8 p.m. – All you need is a blanket/chair, picnic dinner, beverage, party shoes and sweet Southern summer surroundings to enjoy ZamBamBooGee performing on the Village Green stage.
