Weekend at a Glance: Fairy Gardens, Food Trucks and Funk

Spring is finally here – bringing with it plenty of excuses to get outside. Plant a fairy garden, eat good food, run for a cause and more!

Music on the Porch: Eric Przedpelski & Friends – Thursday, 5:30-7pm – Music on the Porch is back for Spring! Enjoy a soulful tribute to David “Fathead” Newman by saxophonist Przedpelski at the Love House, presented by Center for the Study of the American South.

Wines of Sicily Class – Thursday, 6pm – Explore Sicily for an evening at Fearrington Village‘s class featuring a variety of wines from the mediterranean island.

“The Collapsing Empire” Discussion – Thursday, 7-8pm – Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi discusses his new science fiction novel at Flyleaf Books. Arrive early and get your copy signed!

Martha Graham Dance Company – Thursday, 7:30pm; Friday, 8pm – Carolina Performing Arts brings the modern dance company to Memorial Hall for an evening influential choreography and exploration. The program will also feature a special CPA commissioned piece by choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Chicano Batman – Thursday, 7pm – The L.A.-based band brings their 1970s psychedelic soul music and Brazilian Tropicalía-inspired tunes to Chapel Hill. Head over to Local 506 for a night of funky fun.

“Alchemy” Opening Reception – Friday, 6-9pm – Attend the opening reception of the latest exhibit at Light Art + Design, featuring artists and makers with a special focus on the manipulation of materials.

30 Plays in 60 Minutes – Friday, 10:30-11:30pm – UNC’s oldest student-led theatre company, LAB! Theatre, presents impossibly short (yet entertaining!) plays in just an hour at UNC Center for Dramatic Art.

Chapel Hill Farmer’s Market Opening Day – Saturday, 8am-noon – Celebrate the start of the market’s 10th season with both old and new vendors.

Spring Fairy Gardening Workshop – Saturday, 10-11am – Bring the kiddos to Piedmont Feed & Garden Center to create a whimsical miniature garden.

Gary Presents: Egg and Embryo Development – Saturday, 11am-noon – Learn a little more about those flying friends in your backyard with North Carolina native Gary Davis, an avian physiology expert and sales associate at Wild Birds Unlimited of Chapel Hill.

Pet Adoption Day – Saturday, noon-2pm – Hope Animal Rescue brings adoptable dogs and puppies to Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming for a day of meeting new friends and trying gourmet (dog) treats.

Lab Tour – Saturday, 1-3:30pm – See research in action on a tour of the Dr. Channing Der Lab in the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, where Dr. Der will lead a research presentation followed by a tour of facilities. This event is presented by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Board.

No Shame Theatre – Saturday, 8pm – Get ready for an unpredictable night at The ArtsCenter, where 15 pieces, ranging from comedy sketches to monologues to dances and songs, will arrive an hour before showtime and performed after less than an hour of rehearsal.

Get Your Motor Running 5k – Sunday, 7:30am – Concussion Awareness Recovery Run hosts a walk/run benefitting the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center. Give your morning a healthy start for a good cause!

Rodeo on Rosemary – Sunday, noon-5pm – Get your food truck fix at Chapel Hill’s first food truck rodeo on Rosemary, featuring 13 local food trucks. Guests can dine on the top of Wallace Parking Deck and enjoy games and music in the plaza. This event is hosted by Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation in collaboration with Downtown Partnership and Raleigh Durham Mobile Food Association.

Family and Friends Sunday – Sunday, 1pm – Ackland Art Museum and Carolina Performing Arts co-host Family and Friends Sunday in the museum’s galleries. Stop by for family friendly music, crafts and games in connection to the performances this weekend by Martha Graham Dance Company.

North Carolina Poetry Society Reading – Sunday, 2-3pm – McIntyre’s Books hosts poets Gary Phillips, Richard Ostrander and Jo Taylor in celebration of independent book stores and the art of poetry.
