Guests started wiping their eyes when they saw the honorary ring bearer – the bride’s 3-month-old nephew Brendan Shiraishi – cradled in the arms of his grandmother, who walked him slowly down the aisle.
Then the tears really started to flow when beloved friend of the couple, Laura Humphreys of Dublin, Ireland, choked up while she read from the children’s book I Like You, summarizing the couples’ relationship:
“Everything that happens is nicer with you.
I can’t remember when I didn’t like you.
It must have been lonesome then.”
CHM Editor Andrea Griffith and Patrick Cash – a process engineer at Atex Technologies, a medical textile company near Pinehurst – stood under a bamboo-and-ivy arbor handmade by the bride’s parents as the words were recited on a perfectly cloudless day at Briar Chapel’s Clubhouse.
The couple, who met while launching their careers in Greensboro in 2006, wanted to plan an intimate gathering with unique and personal touches in their new hometown. Guests enjoyed drinks on the lawn prior to the ceremony’s start. The newlyweds, who had taken dancing lessons, waltzed during their first dance. Later, the bride, who is always up for karaoke, took the mic in an impromptu performance as the band, Shine of Raleigh, provided backup on Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.” CHM photographer Briana Brough set up a photo booth complete with props. A sign of fidelity, peacock feathers adorned the bouquets, centerpieces and the cake as guests dined and danced on the clubhouse’s spacious porches during the first wedding ever held at Briar Chapel.
In attendance were the bride’s parents, Joe and Cheryl Griffith of Mount Sidney, Virginia, and the groom’s parents, Robbie and Jeanette Cash of St. Pauls. Leah Griffith Shiraishi, the bride’s sister, of Barboursville, Virginia, served as the matron of honor; Terence Maarschalkerweerd, the groom’s college roommate, of Apex, was the best man. Locals in attendance included Bill and Lynn Cash (great uncle and aunt of the groom) of Governors Club; Michael and Stacie Christie, Benjamin Davis and Jennifer Willingham and Christopher and Mindy Bradshaw of Pittsboro; and the staff of CHM. A rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom’s parents on the eve of the wedding at Carmine’s, and a wine reception at Studio 91 followed. On Sunday, the matron of honor and her husband hosted a brunch at the bride and groom’s home in Pittsboro before the newlyweds embarked on their honeymoon in Cancun. CHM
