Serendipity brought Lauren Sacks and Roy Van Veld together several times before their first date. For years, they bumped into each other at the drug store where Roy interned as a pharmacy student and Lauren was a customer, and they also chatted one night at Lucy’s (now P.T.’s).
After all those chance encounters, the two finally went on an actual date, an epic 11-hour adventure that included a broken-down car and a Cirque du Soleil show. After about a year and a half of dating, the couple got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2009 when Roy proposed on the slopes of Snowshoe Mountain, reversing Lauren’s previous disdain for both the sport and the holiday.
On the morning of their wedding, forecasters were calling for tornadoes. But luckily, after a few hours of rain, the skies cleared just in time for the ceremony and a relaxed, laid back reception at Rock Quarry Farm, complete with a bonfire, s’mores and an ice cream sundae bar by Maple View Farms.
In attendance were the the groom’s parents, Robert VanVeld of Hillsborough and Jane Dyer of Durham, and the bride’s mother, Kathryn Sacks of Pennsylvania. The wedding’s signature drink was a Mai Tai, a special recipe served in memory of the bride’s father, the late David Sacks. Local members of the bridal party included Kate Dobbs-Ariail of Durham and Carleen Brown and Rob Van Veld of Hillsborough.
The newlyweds reside in Carrboro. Lauren, who graduated from UNC in 2000, worked for the ArtsCenter for six years before starting a position with the UNC Student Union in 2009. Roy graduated from UNC School of Pharmacy and now works for Walgreens. CHM
