Our November/December cover story on Chapel Hill's friendliest dogs is enough to make you want to run out and acquire a whole litter of furry friends. But before you head over to a breeder or a pet store to get a new family pet, consider checking out some of Orange County’s nonprofit animal organizations. Many of the dogs gracing our magazine's pages came from these places, whose staffs work for the satisfaction of seeing abandoned and homeless animals matched with a loving family. Below, check out some different nonprofits and their services to see if your new best friend is waiting.

Paws4Ever

Paws4Ever, formerly the Animal Protection Society of Orange County, is dedicated to improving animal welfare and building bonds between humans and animals. The organization, based out of Mebane, runs an education program for schools, churches and businesses to teach humane treatment of companion animals and the promotion of affordable spay and neuter surgeries. Paws4Ever also has a dog training center that offers high-quality training programs for dogs and their owners.

Since the number of adoptable pets in several county shelters outpaces the space to house them, Paws4Ever acts as a placement partner, along with the support of volunteers. The nonprofit has an adoption process to ensure all animals are given to the right home, including landlord and vet checks. Dogs and puppies can be adopted for $160, and cats and kittens can be adopted for $100. All dogs and cats receive a health examination, vaccination, de-worming and are microchipped.

CARE

Chatham Animal Rescue and Education is a network of foster homes that provides care for animals until they can be adopted into permanent homes. Although they are not located in one specific place, they hold regular “Adoption Days” at various locations throughout the Triangle. CARE also works closely with the Chatham County Animal Shelter, pulling dogs and cats from the shelter to place in foster homes.

CARE offers many resources for your adoption consideration on their website, such as a breed selection guidance page and a list of things to consider before adopting. If you want to adopt from CARE, the fee for a dog or puppy is $175. The cost is $265 if the dog has not been spayed or neutered. However, the $100 fee will be returned to you once your dog has been sterilized by your vet. A cat adoption fee is $100, plus $50 if the cat has not been spayed or neutered, but will be refunded upon sterilization. All fees include health checks and microchipping.
