We celebrate that fact with our cover story on Tar Heel standouts. And cover guy Phil Ford (get behind the scenes of our photo shoot by clicking here), Mia Hamm, Bobby Frasor, Jason Stanicek, Ken Mack, Charlotte Smith and Eric Montross not only stood out – they are still calling our area home. Adam Lucas catches up with these legends. He also takes on what he calls the toughest writing assignment ever: He names the Top 10 moments in UNC sports history. Adam, we appreciate you sticking your neck out on this. As he says, he could have picked 100 moments. But he did a good job of narrowing it down. I mean, who could forget Jordan’s winning jumper in the ’82 championship game or Connor Barth’s 2004 kick against Miami that ignited a raucous celebration on Franklin Street?
Elsewhere in the issue, get ready for the New Year with some weight-loss tips from Ed Brantley and Heba Salama, who live in Chapel Hill and nearly won The Biggest Loser in 2008. (Heba, born and raised in Chapel Hill, is a graduate of Chapel Hill High.)
And for those of you planning a wedding in 2012, we collected advice from recent brides on what to do before you say, “I do” – from getting organized to incorporating personal touches into your reception. Get inspired by their wisdom and their wedding photos.
And art lovers, take note. The owners of our Great Home – Tommy and Marty Mitchell – know art. They make it and restore it for a living. And they’re huge collectors of it – as evidenced by their gorgeous Greenwood home.
We also talk with two foodies, Gene Hamer of Crook’s Corner (see our web extra for more from our interview with Gene) and Larry Shaw of A Southern Season, about the secrets to their businesses.
