The two were close friends but never dated during high school. (Well, there was one kiss …)
After high school, they went their separate ways. Breana graduated from UNC with a degree in public health and nutrition and then moved to London to attend culinary school and take wine courses. Scott was a foodie, too, working as a chef in fine dining restaurants while attending Appalachian State University.
Seven years after Breana’s high school graduation, the pair reconnected, imbibing a shared bottle of Catena Malbec at West End Wine Bar and a lychee martini at Lantern on their first date.
The March 2009 proposal befitted their epicurean backgrounds. They strolled down to the Carrboro Farmers’ Market, where Scott got down on one knee and told Breana she was the cheese to his macaroni and the milk to his cookies.
The couple wed at Black Swan Lake, a private estate in Napa, California. In attendance were the bride’s parents, Dr. Myla Lai-Goldman and Dr. Eric Lai, and the groom’s parents, Mary Beck and Dr. James Beck. Local members of the bridal party included: flower girl Madison Beck and officiant Maggi Grace, Lauren McDermott, Chrysecolla Taico, Thane Maxwell, Jay Linke, Alex Sayre, Lucas Stephen, Kirin Walsh and UNC alumna Rebecca Summe.
Breana and Scott reside in Chapel Hill. Breana is in the master’s in public health and nutrition program at UNC, and Scott is working on a double master’s degree in natural resources and geographic information science at N.C. State University. CHM
