When mystery writer Margaret Maron created her well-known character Judge Deborah Knott, she wanted to surround her with a big Southern family who loved each other. Though dysfunction can be entertaining, it wasn't the picture Maron wanted to paint of the South.

Maron just released her 17th title to feature Knott, Three-Day Town -- pretty remarkable for someone who never took a writing course and didn't graduate from college.

Lee Smith, a highly respected author in her own right, is certainly impressed. "I have tried to write two mysteries," she says, "and they're both in my dresser drawer. This is hard."

The two authors joined ticket holders at Foster's Market last night for the eighth annual Tea with Lee, a benefit for The Women's Center, a nonprofit that works to educate and empower women and girls through programs like legal services, career advising and financial planning. After tea and sandwiches, Maron and  Smith spoke to the crowd and signed copies of their books.
