Jacoby Lyght and Carmaleita Willis were undergraduates when they met one afternoon at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Carmaleita thought Jacoby was cute and pointed him out to a girlfriend as he walked by. Her friend took charge, walking up to the Chapel Hill High School graduate and informing him that she had a friend he needed to meet.

The two hit it off immediately, dating all the way through college. Jacoby proposed in 2009, completely surprising his soon-to-be wife as she was in the middle of a load of laundry.

The couple were married at the First Metropolitan Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, with a reception following at the Bluff Plantation. In attendance were the bride’s parents, Joseph and Cheryl Willis of Augusta, and the groom’s parents, Otis and Lynn Lyght of Chapel Hill. Also in attendance were Tyler Dunston, the ring bearer, and Victoria Dunston, the flower girl, both of Chapel Hill. Cheryl Y. Willis was the maid of honor, and Montoiyo Kennedy was the best man.

The couple reside in Fairburn, Georgia, but Jacoby says he will make his wife a Tar Heel one way or another. Carmaleita is an organizer for the Georgia Association of Educators, and Jacoby is an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration. CHM
