« Morning Roundup: Varsity for Sale, Championship Tree Carvings and a Kickball League Kicks Off »

The Varsity (Photo by Briana Brough)-The N&O is reporting that a downtown Chapel Hill landmark, the Varsity movie theater, is for sale. Owner Bruce Stone says the sale has nothing to do with a lack of ticket sales, but he wants to sell because of his age (Stone just turned 63). If the Varsity closes, it would leave downtown Chapel Hill without a movie theater for the first time in decades, as the Carolina Theater across the street - which Stone also owned - closed in 2005 when building owner Joe Riddle decided to seek a single tenant for the property. The N&O also includes this interesting tidbit:

On Monday, the possibility that the Varsity might close prompted former Alderman Allen Spalt to send e-mail to Carrboro Town Hall suggesting, "If it can't be saved where it is, maybe it is finally time for a movie theater in Carrboro?"

-After an 11-foot Green Ash tree in downtown Chapel Hill was damaged in the celebration following UNC's basketball national championship, the tree's canopy had to be cut off, leaving a seven-food stump. Mayor Kevin Foy and Chapel Hill Public Arts Administrator Jeffrey York had the great idea to turn the stump into a piece of art commemorating the Heels' win, as Dwight Bassett, the Town's economic development director who doubles as a master wood carver, got to work on molding the stump into a Tar Heel Trophy. We're not sure what the finished product will look like yet, but while Basset is envisioning a player with arm extended holding a basketball, personally I vote for just carving "Where's Dook?" into the stump.

-Speaking of UNC basketball, everyone around the Chapel Hill Magazine offices enjoyed Bobby Frasor's running diary of the Tar Heels' recent visit to the White House that he did with ESPN. Check it out:

-And finally, for those of you who still long for those carefree days of the third grade, Carrboro is starting up a kickball league! Games are scheduled to start this weekend (May 30) at Anderson Park, so better hurry if you want to register a team, or you can email carrborokickball@gmail.com if you want to get put on a team as a free agent. The registration deadline is June 10, so check out carrborokickball.wordpress.com if you want to get involved.
