University Mall Celebrates Earth Day

With the great weather we've been having, celebrating Earth Day all month long is a true pleasure. University Mall is teaming up with the Chapel Hill Public Arts office for a special ecology-themed photo competition and exhibition. Beginning April 12, selected photographs (juried by an artist selection committee comprised of select University Mall merchants representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public Arts Office, and local professional photographers) are being exhibited throughout University Mall through May 30. Out of the 240 photographs submitted, 42 have been selected to be on display. Exhibiting photographers have the opportunity to share in $2,000 in awards, including a $1,000 first place prize. Former Chapel Hill photographer, now residing in Raleigh, Andrew Ross, and Durham-based photographer Dian Amato will select three award winners.

In addition to these top prizes, a People's Choice Award will also be awarded to the photographer with the most public votes in the amount of $250.  Residents and visitors are invited to visit University Mall to vote on their favorite photo between April 12 and April 28 (although the exhibit will stay up through May). Individuals may vote, after April 15, for the People’s Choice Award on University Mall’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/UniversityMallNC. To view all 240 pictures, visit the Natural Selections Gallery on University Mall’s web site at www.UniversityMallNC.com after April 15.

In conjunction with the competition, The Print Shop in University Mall is celebrating by introducing a new line of eco-friendly frames, offering 20% off all EcoCare framing, April 12th – April 30th.  These frames have been carefully designed and engineered to have the smallest “footprint” possible on the environment and are manufactured using timber harvested from managed and sustainable forests. They are made from reforested wood, tree-free bamboo, and organic, water-based stains and are beautiful. In fact, many of the photos on display at University Mall have been framed in the EcoCare frames.

U-Mall Hosts Nature Photography Contest

Attention, shutterbugs: Here’s a way to bring some attention to Earth Action Day and possibly win some cash at the same time.Lori Vrba Photography, all rights reserved. Permission is granted for a one time use of the photograph “Earth."

University Mall is hosting a photo contest, “Natural Selections,” that has an ecological theme. So think nature photos with themes of nature, conservation and low ecological impact. Submissions will be accepted through March 3. Residents, 18 years and older, of Orange, Durham, Wake, Chatham and Alamance counties are eligible. Submitted photos must have been produced within the past two years (so don’t rely on your vault of photos from 20 years ago!). For more details on rules and eligibility, click here.

Selected photos will be unveiled at Chapel Hill’s Earth Day Celebration at Southern Community Park and will then be on display at University Mall from April 12 to May 30.

Tyndall Galleries To Close U-Mall Space

UPDATE: U-Mall's Turning Point Gallery has closed as well. Owner Gary Meldrum retired. Word is it shut its doors Monday.

Jane Shuping Tyndall has just announced her plans to close Tyndall Galleries at University Mall and become a virtual gallery. She will be open through Jan. 30.

The gallery has operated for seven years at University Mall.

Below is an excerpt from the e-mail she just sent out to gallery friends:

"After seven wonderful years at University Mall in Chapel Hill and twelve prior to that at Brightleaf Square in Durham, I've decided to retire to devote more time to art consulting and to my family. Tyndall Galleries will close its physical space at University Mall and become a virtual gallery, and I will change my position as gallery director back to my roots as an art consultant. We will continue to represent the same brilliant group of artists you have come to love over the years, and you will still be able to enjoy and purchase their work on our website as always at www.tyndallgalleries.com. Discovering Your Personal Style

Fashion consultant and Chapel Hill resident Debbie Suchoff has one rule for women when it comes to style: Throw out all the rules you've read in fashion magazines.Suchoff demonstrates how a basic black dress can be transformed with the right accessories.

"The only rule I have is: Be true to yourself and your style," she says.

Suchoff spoke this morning at Dina Porter in University Mall to a group of women on the topic of "Discovering Your Personal Style." She works at Dina Porter and runs her own business, Fashion Savvy, which takes her into the closets of her clients, sorting through what to keep and what to toss. Items that are weeded out are donated to Dress for Success, a nonprofit that gives clothes to low-income women so that they have something appropriate to wear to job interviews.

This morning, Suchoff encouraged her audience of a dozen or so women to think about an outfit in their closet that makes them feel confident when they wear it. That outfit probably best represents their personal style.

Women should also ensure that their closets represent who they are right now. Update your wardrobe to reflect any career or lifestyle changes.

Each morning, Suchoff says, ask yourself not "What do I want to wear today?" but "How do I want to feel today?" Comfortable? Classic? Elegant? Artistic? This question will help you put together the right outfit for your mood.

And finally, Suchoff says, feel free to have fun because "it's not rocket science."

Suchoff's interest in fashion began at a young age. Her father was a furrier, and her mother was a milliner. She has designed jewelry for the past 22 years. To contact her about her consulting services, e-mail debbiesuchoff@yahoo.com.

Her next presentation at Dina Porter will be Aug. 25 at 5:30pm and Aug. 26 at 11:30am. The topic will be "Building Your Core Wardrobe." Those planning to attend the free event should e-mail DinaPorter@aol.com.

A Q&A with the ArtsCenter's New Leader

As we reported last week, The ArtsCenter has a new executive director, Ed Camp, who has been the general manager of University Mall for the past year.

Camp’s return to Chapel Hill is something of a homecoming – he graduated from UNC’s School of Journalism in 1980 and has spent the past 26 years in the shopping center business, moving around to “too many places to list.”

His new job starts Aug. 24. We spoke today about his new gig, his love of the arts and how he feels to leave the mall.

Were you a big supporter of the ArtsCenter prior to this new job?

I’ve only been back in Chapel Hill since May of last year. When I started at University Mall, we started doing community support projects of different types… One of the things we’ve been working on is getting a satellite of the ArtsCenter at the mall [which will open in September]. I’ve always been a supporter of the arts.

Are you artistic?

I’m creative; I wouldn’t call myself an artist. My background is more on the marketing and copywriting side. I get my creativity from my mother. But it would be a stretch to call myself an artist.

What made you decide to go after this job?

I love Chapel Hill. When I came back here, hopefully to stay, one of the things I wanted to do was make a significant contribution to the community. I’ve always been a big supporter of the arts. When I was in Charleston [for four years prior to returning to Chapel Hill], I learned how important arts education is for children. I think the planets just aligned for me to take this position.

I didn’t realize you had been in the shopping center business for so long. This is really a big career change.

It’s applying the skills and interests and talent I have to a new situation, but something that I feel very passionate about. Arts are an important part of any community, and they’re an important part of business development. When companies think about moving to a community, one of the things they ask is, "How is the arts community?" Arts and business are tied together.

This is a tough year for everyone. How will you guide this nonprofit through the recession?

The great thing about the ArtsCenter is it has a tremendous amount of support in the community. ... It’s touched the lives of so many families. … The area will embrace what we’re wanting to do -- taking the ArtsCenter to a different level. But every business is challenged right now.

What does that mean, taking it to a different level?

I’m going to spend the next 30 days talking to the board and talking to the people we serve and to the team members at the ArtsCenter. I’ll ask them what their vision is. And then I’ll create a development plan for the future. I think it’s premature until I get in there and talk to all those people. But I do think the ArtsCenter can play a bigger role in the community.

Who will lead the mall?

They’re searching right now, and I know they will find someone that will a do a wonderful job there.

Can you tell me a little bit more about the deal between the mall and the ArtsCenter? The ArtsCenter is using some space in the mall starting next month?

We’ll be having classes there -- dance classes and some art classes. It’s going to be in an empty storefront across from The Print Shop. We’re going to be doing some concerts there that we’ll be working on in the fall. Part of my attraction to the [executive director] job was being on the other side of the table in bringing that to fruition.

Any sadness about leaving University Mall?

I think any transition is good and bad -- always you miss the people you work with. They’re a great group -- just a wonderful group of professionals. But I’m going to a great group as well. … Great things come to you when you least expect them. This is not something I expected when I came back to Chapel Hill. But I’m excited.

Modern Times Gets New Look, Throws a Party

Andrea Griffith and I made an after-work stop at Modern Times at University Mall last night, wanting to scope out the store’s new look. Store owner Hillary Fisher told me that the owners of University Mall – in efforts to help retailers - hired special consultants to redesign the inside of some of the stores. Modern Times took them up on the offer, and threw a party to celebrate the new look.

It’s definitely edgy, definitely fun. Mannequins hung from the ceiling (the one with the red dress has some shoes I covet), an accent wall has been painted red, and the merchandise was rearranged. Plus, there was champagne and some great cheese from A Southern Season to celebrate the transformation. I was particularly wild about the Alben D'alpeggio. It’s a soft, spring cheese that is mild, but with lots of different flavors. Just as Andrea and I were getting ready to leave, Hillary thanked us for coming, and summed up her excitement about the store's new look: "It’s swanky now,” she said.
