Market Street Coffeehouse announced today that it will open in the former 3CUPS location on Feb. 22.

Owner Sarah Owens says they closed on the lease today at 227 S. Elliiott Rd. Owens also owns Market Street Coffee and Ice Cream on Weaver St., Homestead Rd. and in Meadowmont.

While 3CUPS specialized in gourmet and local coffee, tea, beer and wine, Owens says the new shop will focus more on tea and coffee and locally sourced food products. They've already begun stocking the shelves with North Carolina-made specialties like salsas, jams and honey.

"We'll have the same retail for coffee and tea, but we won't be a wine shop," Owens says. "Mostly because we want to play to our strengths. We know nothing about wine and dont' want to pretend that we do."

That said, the Coffeehouse will serve beer and wine by the glass as soon as it gets an ABC permit. Owens says the Chapel Hill Wine Company will help them develop a unique wine list.

3CUPS, which closed Feb. 2 after eight years in business, was owned by Lex Alexander, the man behind Wellspring and then Whole Foods. Owens says Alexander will be working for Market Street in a consulting capacity.

"Lex is going to serve as an advisor for us," Owens says. "I'm personally thrilled to be working with him because he's so full of so many great ideas."

Market Street Coffeehouse will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. TW
