The Lowes at Sutton's: Rob, wife Sheryl and son Matthew
Rob Lowe felt right at home when he popped in at Sutton’s Drug Store on Friday afternoon with his wife and son. “He said his father used to run a place like this back in Ohio,” Manager Don Pinney says. “He said it brought back memories.”
A far cry from the health-conscious character he plays on Parks and Recreation, he downed a cheeseburger, a hot dog and a milkshake. “He said it was one of the best burgers he ever had,” Don says. “And he said they would be back. That made me feel good.”
The Lowes, visiting their son, Matthew, who goes to Duke, happened upon the lunch counter during a stroll down Franklin St. “We teased [Matthew] and said, ‘You don’t want to go to Carolina?’” Don says.
UNC students Abdul Eljabaly and Mahreed Khan were the first to spot the celebrity. “We talked about the great food at Sutton's and how we were huge fans,” he says, adding that photo-seeks soon lined up. “We quickly took a picture with him and left so we wouldn't take too much of his time.”
The Lowes’ incognito dissipated quickly after that, and Don had to stand guard to keep the line of photo-seekers at bay while the family finished their meal. But all accounts indicate the actor was beyond gracious to his Chapel Hill public.
“Just as friendly as could be,” owner John Woodard says. “The nicest guy in the world.” TW
