Sugarland

Sugarland offers frozen martinis and Italian-style gelato.

Chapel Hill might just be chilled to perfection this summer. Various restaurants and shops offer sweet treats perfect for those hot days when relief seems to be in short supply.

For a cheap frozen treat, stop at the Yogurt Pump — known affectionately around town as YoPo. The frozen yogurt shop offers up to eight different flavors of frozen yogurt a day, with toppings that include fresh strawberries and blueberries. For just $2.25 in cash, visitors can get a small cup of carefully swirled frozen yogurt brimming over the top. (Toppings cost 70 cents each.) The shop also serves frozen yogurt milkshakes made with skim milk for a refreshing, healthy alternative to the ice cream milkshake.

But if it’s a milkshake that you want, stop by Sutton’s Drug Store. Since 1923, Sutton’s has been serving up one of the best in town, and today it features up to nine different flavors with optional mix-ins like Oreo, Reese's Cups, bananas and more. For something different, try a local corn milkshake at Sandwhich -- it's surprisingly sweet yet light at the same time.

For something with a little more kick, head over to Sugarland on East Franklin Street and enjoy one of their revered frozen martinis. The Tartini, one of their most famous martinis -- and one of the tastiest -- is made with the store's custom lemon gelato and mixed with peach schnapps, blue curaçao and vodka. The martinis cost about $8 on an average day but are reduced to $5 on Mondays. Sugarland's delicious Italian-style gelato comes in an array of flavors, from Mexican chocolate to blood orange.
