Amanda Thorne and Diane Alderson.

If they had a hammer – they’d build a home for someone in need.

Female volunteers with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County kicked off a building blitz (that will continue through Oct. 22) in order to give Chaw Chaw and Kyaw Lay Thwai and their children a new home in Phoenix Place, an affordable subdivision of green-certified homes within the Rogers Road community.

In lieu of a down payment, the family will work alongside volunteers to help build their home and the homes of their neighbors. After closing, the family will repay a 0% interest mortgage by making affordable monthly payments. The funds will be recycled, allowing Habitat to serve more families in Orange County.

To date, Women Build, which is designed to empower women to take on leadership roles and learn new skills while helping the community, has created five homes in Chapel Hill.

Check out our slideshow of photos from Saturday's construction.
