Kramer came to Chapel Hill from New York a year and a half ago. She was looking for a new place to live and was immediately struck by the beauty, atmosphere and artistic communities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro when she visited.

“I drove through Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and I thought, ‘This is the place for me,’” says Kramer. “I feel completely at home here in the midst of so many artists; I am in good company.”

Kramer brought her entire library of glass that she uses to make her mosaics with her from her previous home.

“I spent the last eight to 10 years collecting glass,” Kramer says. “I have enough to last a lifetime.”

Kramer’s mosaic work primarily uses glass, but she has recently incorporated other materials including pearl, stone, silver, garnet, crystal and shells. The mosaics take a long time to complete and much of her work focuses on landscapes that Kramer says are used like large-scale tiling and backsplashes. She is currently working on an image of a Persian rug, but she also takes commissions from people if there are images they would like put into mosaic. The SAMA exhibition runs from March 1 through April 30 in the Lexington Center Museum and Gallery in Lexington, Ky., and will feature artists from the U.K., Canada, South Africa, Turkey, Italy and Israel alongside the American entries. Because the show is juried, there is an award for the overall, “Best in Show,” as well as a prize for each of the three categories: two-dimensional, three-dimensional and architectural.
