Some people associate wallpaper with the 70s -- or their grandmother’s house. When I mention “wallpaper” to some clients, they look at me with a dubious expression because all they can think of is the mauve colored florals that were once in vogue. This, of course, is not what I am talking about. Instead, I am referring to the gorgeous and versatile wallpaper in today’s market that will instantaneously uplift a room. Just like in fashion, design trends circle right back around. In the case of wallpaper, it has come back with a bang! Everytime I pick up a design magazine, I notice more and more wallpaper being used in rooms.  In my own projects, I turn to wallpaper to add a little sparkle or added interest to a space.

There are so many enticing choices out there. Before getting into the selection process, it is important to identify what you want the paper to achieve. I tend to think of wallpaper in three categories: the elegant, the graphic and the textured.

Elegant: This category consists of patterns such as tonal damasks, stripes and subtle floral patterns. I particularly am in love with Zoffany and Schumacher damasks right now. They are beautiful in dining rooms, powder rooms and bedrooms.

Graphic: This category includes trellises, greek keys, diamonds and even abstract floral prints. In neutrals or bright colors, they pack a big punch. I love China Seas and Allan Campbell wallpaper for their interesting graphics and color selections. They are perfect for any playful and modern home.

Textured: This category includes natural fibers (i.e. grasscloth and linen) as well as textured paper. I love using textured wallpaper in a family room or study to add a warm and interesting layer of interest. Phillip Jeffries has recently come out with a beautiful selection of patterned grasscloth papers that are all the rage these days.
