Over the years, the event has raised more than $1.2 million for UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Williams said the cause was dear to his heart because he lost both of his parents to the disease.
Williams' special guest at the breakfast in the Smith Center was ESPN's Stuart Scott, who graduated from UNC in 1987 and is currently battling cancer for a second time. In fact, Scott just finished chemotherapy treatments about a month ago. Scott said that although "cancer sucks," it also unites people. "We're all teammates. ... Cancer can make us teammates with Duke people," he said.
Scott added that his approach to having cancer has been to "make sure it did not change my life," particularly when it comes to his two daughters. "I never felt like a cancer patient," he said. "I never felt like cancer was beating me."
Between a silent and live auction at the event, $73,140 was raised. Live auction items included a basketball signed by the current coaches and players that went for $1,400; two opportunities to attend a pre-game locker room meeting before a non-conference game, sit on the bench during the game and attend the post-game press conference went for $11,000 each; and a framed collage with images and confetti from the 2005 national championship sold for $6,000. Three pairs of tickets to the Nov. 11 UNC versus Michigan State game on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in San Diego, which we wrote about here, went for $15,000 per pair.
Fast Break attendees included Vince Carter, Eric Montross, Coach Everett Withers, Tyler Hansbrough, David Thornton, Woody Durham and Bill Guthridge.
