Randall Kenan is one of the local authors who will be featured in the Southern Scribbling series.

Here’s an opportunity to join a community book club without any pressure to attend and with a bit more star power than your average ladies lunch. For the next five months, favorite Southern authors will be hosting monthly discussions on their own work. The book club kicks off this Thursday at McIntyre’s Books in Fearrington Village (a co-sponsor), with Allan Gurganus and his The Practical Heart: Four Novellas. Jill McCorkle, Lee Smith, Timothy Tyson (an influential planner of the “class”) and Randall Kenan will continue the series, respectively, through May. Most of the authors are North Carolinians, and the hour-long evening affairs will be much more informal discussion than lecture.

Each session is $20, which goes entirely to the event’s other sponsor, Chatham County’s Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services (FVRC). Along with all ticket proceeds, 20% of each month’s featured book sales will also benefit the FVRC. Book club begins at 6:30 p.m.; call McIntyre's at (919) 542-3030 for tickets and more information.
