The Children's Store has reopened in a new location on South Elliott Road. It is located in the Village Plaza shopping center between Mitchell's Home Studio and Jersey Mike's Subs.

The Children's Store, a locally owned toy shop, recently moved to a new location after 34 years in University Mall.

Jeanette Falk opened the store in 1977. Today she and her daughter Becky Broun run the business, now located in the Village Plaza shopping center off of South Elliott Road.

Falk says she and Broun decided it was a good time to move because their lease was up, and they were ready to make a few changes. "We thought it might be a good idea to have our shop open to the street – that it might be more convenient," she says.

Falk also says they wanted a new, bright space. (The storefront has large windows, and the interior walls are painted blue, green and yellow.)

"It feels like a new store to us, and it's completely energized us," she says.

The store is about the same size as the previous location, but it seems bigger because of the open floor plan and the amount of light that comes in, Falk says. Like the previous location, this store also has a kids' play area.

The store's inventory has not changed, but Falk says if she and Broun notice a change in clientele along with the change in location, they may start offering different products. She says it's too early to tell if there's been any change in the number of customers or purchases. The new location opened Jan. 12.

The Children's Store is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. It is open on Sundays from noon until 5 p.m. The store is located at 243 S. Elliott Rd, and its phone number is 942-8027.

The Children's Store

I am thrilled that the store re-opened in Chapel Hill. When it was located at University Mall it wasn't as convenient, this is a great space!

UMall emptying out

I'm curious about the mass exodus from University Mall. It's always been hit or miss, but recently, they've lost a ton of tenants. What's going on there? Are they jacking up the rents?
