Venable owner and chef Drew Moore.
When you step into Venable Rotisserie Bistro, which opened in Carr Mill Mall on May 24, it feels like an upscale dining destination. Various wines line the white-brick walls, the tables are shined, and the bar looks full and inviting. But take a look at the menu -- which features prime ingredients like Atlantic salmon and wild-caught shrimp -- and you'll find relatively affordable prices.
Chef and owner Drew Moore, who attended the Culinary Institute of America and has worked in restaurants all over the world, has lived in Carrboro for 10 years, and his wife, Vanessa, is a Carrboro native. He's no stranger to our food scene, either, having cooked at The Siena Hotel's Il Palio and Tyler's Taproom in addition to being the first chef at The Federal in Durham.
"We found out Fleet Feet was moving, and we'd been looking for a property for two years," Moore says. "So we approached the mall, and they were really interested in what we wanted to do."
Right now, the restaurant -- which takes its name from Carrboro's former moniker -- is focused on making simple, flavorful dishes.
"We can do complex, but we don't think that's what people want from day-to-day," Moore says. "We'll get more cutting edge as we continue."
Moore can't really put a name on the type of cuisine the restaurant offers.
"Terms like gastropub or Euro Bistro sound cheesy," he says. "I mean, they describe us. But what we really offer is elevated comfort food.
"We'd love to be a neighborhood restaurant where people eat two or three times a week. I'd like to see it become a place wehre people linger -- where people come to hang out."
The restaurant is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. and offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. TW
