cycle 20tenThe moment of victory from the 2010 cross-country ride -- reaching the Pacific.
Ten weeks. Twelve riders. More than 3,500 miles by bike. And, hopefully, $30,000 for UNC Lineberger.
On June 10, the Lucky 13 Bike Trip will get underway, with members of Boy Scout Troop 845 leaving the Maryland coast for Oregon. They’ll bike about 60 to 70 miles daily for a good cause. In keeping with the spirit of adventure, they’ll find places to stay along the way, often camping out in town parks.
“We roll into town and ask around,” says Brian Burnham, the trip leader who also guided the troop in 2011 as they hiked El Camino de Santiago and in 2010 as they biked cross-country – two trips that translated to $45,000 for Lineberger, which became the nonprofit of choice because a former scout’s mother is a breast cancer survivor.
The riders, ranging in age from 14 to 18, include Hugh Kelley, Jack Jansen, Caleb Roenigk, Wes Malinchock, DJ Recny, Arthur Mouw, Holden Selkirk, Paris Buedel and Kyle Ferriter. Along with Burnham, Aidan Kelley – an alumnus of the troop’s last two trips – will chaperone.
