Asheville author Robert Beatty will sign copies of his debut novel, Serafina and the Black Cloak, during a special event at Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh. The will include Q&A time with the author, and free food and drink. Serafina and the Black Cloak, a spooky mystery-thriller written for middle-grade audiences, tells the story of a brave and unusual 12-year-old girl who lives secretly in the basement of the Biltmore Estate during the 1890s, the time of George and Edith Vanderbilt. Although it was written for middle grade students, Serafina’s mix of historical fiction, fantasy and mystery makes it appealing to adult readers as well. Serafina has been on the New York Times and Barnes & Noble bestseller lists since its nationwide release on July 14, and it was selected by the Southern Independent Booksellers Association as a 2015 Summer Okra Pick, one of 12 books chosen by SIBA to represent the season’s “best in Southern literature.” Publisher Disney Hyperion recently gave the go-ahead for two more Serafina books. Look for Book 2 in the series in late 2016.
