Happy National Nutrition Month! Each March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates National Nutrition Month and this year, their theme is “Bite Into a Healthy Lifestyle”. Rather than making every change in your life at once, I believe it’s helpful to think that each day and time we eat, we have a chance to make it a healthy, balanced option. And if you have a day of indulgence? The next day is another chance to make changes.
In no way does this mean giving up things that you enjoy, but rather seeing where they fit in a balanced diet. For our family, that means adding spinach to a lasagna and serving it with salad or making a soup that not only has noodles, but is chock full of vegetables and lean protein, such as chickpeas. You may be thinking that this requires some planning and it does. Read my recent blog on meal planning for some tips.
Not only is our intake part of a healthy lifestyle, but so is regular physical activity. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Breaking that down, it’s 30 minutes, 5 days per week. If that seems daunting, start with a smaller, SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound) goal such as “I plan to exercise at least 3 times a week for thirty minutes, with 2 of the times being cardiovascular activities and 1 being strength training”. Take it one step further and plan the days into your schedule, identifying which activity will occur at each time.
