Weekend at a Glance: Comedy, Cookouts and Concerts

PlayMakers Repertory Company’s production of “The Cake” by UNC alumnus Bekah Brunstetter opens this weekend.

The Cake – Wednesday-Friday, 7:30pm; Sunday, 2pm – Get your fill of comedy and drama in this original play written by UNC alumnus and “This Is Us” screenwriter Bekah Brunstetter, making its regional premiere at PlayMakers Repertory Company.

Bill Frisell: HARMONY featuring Petra Haden – Thursday, 8pm – Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell is bringing his brand new project HARMONY to The ArtsCenter with a special feature from vocalist Petra Haden (daughter of jazz legend Charlie Haden).

Closer Than They Appear – Thursday-Saturday, 8pm; Sunday, 3pm – StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance and the UNC Process Series present “Closer Than They Appear.” This multi-media theater piece, written by Christine Evans, tells the story of an encounter between an American soldier and an Iraqi blogger.

Hillsborough Hog Day – Friday, 6-10pm; Saturday, 10am-6 pm – Don’t miss this two-day festival in its 35th year hosted at Hillsborough’s River Park, including live music, handmade jewelry, contests, games and – of course – barbecue. Admission is free!

Super Cooper’s Rockin’ Run – Saturday, 8am-12pm – The 7th Annual Super Cooper’s Rockin’ Run will take place in Chapel Hill’s Southern Village to benefit Super Cooper’s Little Red Wagon Foundation. This family-friendly event will include lots of activities to play, eat and enjoy the outdoors.

Outdoor Concert on the Southern Village Green – Sunday, 6pm – The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra will be playing on the Village Green. Featuring classics such as ‘Two O’clock Jump’, Stompin’ at the Savoy’ and ‘Frenesi’ this event is sponsored by Hyatt Place-Chapel Hill in Southern Village.
