Weekend at a Glance: Music, Museums and Markets

Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Ruba Katrib – Thursday, 6pm – UNC’s Hanes Art Center hosts Ruba Katrib, newly appointed curator for MoMA PS1, as she lectures on contemporary art and artists. Free.

Grand Re-opening of FRANK – Friday, 10am-5pm – FRANK is celebrating its new location at University Place, where it moved after seven years downtown. Mingle with local artists and enjoy light refreshments. Free.

Banjo Romantika Band Concert – Friday, 7pm – Banjo Romantika Band will perform at Vimala’s Curryblossom Café as part of a larger weekend celebrating bluegrass music. Organized by the UNC Music Department and The Carolina Bluegrass Initiative. Free.

Black Pioneers Project – Friday, 7-9pm – In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Black Student Movement, students are combining spoken word and dance with Arts Everywhere Initiative and BSM professionals’ dramatic renderings of oral histories. Come to the Historic PlayMakers Theater to view the production on African-American history as it pertains to UNC. Free.

WXYC Valentine’s Day Dance – Friday, 9pm – Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Cat’s Cradle with a night of dancing presented by the student-led WXYC radio station. Tickets starting at $5.

Art Adventures at the Ackland – Saturday, 10:30am-12pm & 1-2:30pm – Bring the kids to the Ackland Art Museum for a day of viewing and creating art. Saturday’s session is about Mondrian-Inspired Hearts and is designed for children ages 6-9. Tickets: free for members, $5 non-members.

Farm Valentines With Goats! – Saturday, 12-4pm – Bring the entire family to Spring Haven Farm to meet Peppa Pig, take pictures with your favorite goats and enjoy more Valentine’s Day activities. Tickets: $10, free for children 3 and under.

Get Wild! Nature Detectives – Saturday, 1-3pm – Join others at the Brumley Nature Preserve to learn how to track local critters and participate in an animal tracking adventure. Program open to families with children ages 4 and up. Free, registration required.

Spectrum Concert – Saturday, 7:30pm – UNC Department of Music hosts the second annual Spectrum Concert as part of UNC Music’s Scholarship Benefit Concert Series. The showcase features 15 performances from ensembles to soloists in Moeser Auditorium. Tickets: $10 public, $5 UNC students/staff.

The Five Ages of Love – Saturday, 8pm – This annual event, hosted at The ArtsCenter, features Transactors Improv artists performing five episodes of different stages love as improvised from audience suggestion. Tickets: $15 public, $12 senior, $10 student.

Uni and Starbenders Concert – Saturday, 9pm – Local 506 presents Uni, a new glam band featuring Kemp Muhl of The GOASTT, in its first mini-tour. Starbenders will perform as a supporting act. Tickets start at $10.

Valentine’s Pop-Up Market – Sunday, 1pm-3pm – Grab some drinks and pastries from Joe Van Gogh while you shop their Valentine’s Market featuring 10 local vendors with an assortment of gifts perfect for loved ones. Free.

Brightstar Theater Presents Frederick Douglass – Sunday, 2pm – Visit Chapel Hill Public Library to see a production of highlights from Frederick Douglass’ life from a highly acclaimed touring theater company. Recommended for 4th grade children to adults. Free.

Elizabeth Keckly in Context – Sunday, 3-4:30pm – Burwell School Historic Site presents a year-long program highlighting Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly, a trusted confidante of First Lady Mary Lincoln, and African American life in historic Hillsborough on the 200th anniversary of Keckly’s birth. This inaugural lecture will be held at Dickerson Chapel AME Church. Speakers include UNC professor Dr. Reginald Hildebrand and Hillsborough native Beverly Payne. Free.

Shack, Rattle & Roll – Sunday, 5-8pm – Al’s Burger Shack is throwing a party at TOPO to benefit SKJAJA. There will be live music from Liquid Pleasure, light appetizers and a cash bar. Tickets: $25.

Girl Scout Cookie Wine and Beer Pairing – Monday, 6:30pm – Find the perfect pairing for your Thin Mints at Hyatt Place Chapel Hill/Southern Village Monday night, followed by a screening of the UNC v. Notre Dame basketball game. Make your reservations by February 9 with your name and choice of beer or wine flight. Tickets: $10.
