Black Umfolosi @ The ArtsCenter
Sep 8 @ 8:00 pm

Founded in 1982 by school friends in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and named after their ancestral homeland along the Umfolozi Omnyama River in South Africa, Black Umfolosi combines spectacular acapella harmonies and exuberant dance into a spirited and engaging whole. Intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping blend with brilliant choreography and traditional Gumboot Dances of the South African mining regions in an energetic showcase of their musical heritage.

Rio Mira at The ArtsCenter @ The ArtsCenter
Oct 13 all-day

Marimba, percussion, and vocals dominate the compelling sound of world-music super group Rio Mira, which brings to life the cultural heritage of people of African descent in the Colombian South Pacific region and Esmeraldas Province of Ecuador. In reworking and revitalizing this tradition, they create a mesmerizing performance that is both contemporary and unique, moving from call-and response vocal refrains to densely melodic dance numbers. Their most recent album, Marimba Del Pacifico, is comprised of five songs each from Colombia and Ecuador, demonstrating the “bi-national” nature of the project as well as the diversity of the cultural heritage they represent.
