Common Ground @ Hillsborough Gallery of Arts
Aug 28 – Sep 4 all-day

Paintings by Linda Carmel and Michele Yellin, jewelry by Nell Chandler and pottery by Evelyn Ward. Opening reception during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk, July 27th 6-9pm.
Linda Carmel’s paintings in this show reflect her thoughts on the current predicament American society is facing. “My work illuminates how women can help heal a torn community. This series points toward a time of compassion for all of humanity and a respect for the Earth. With a positive attitude and with humor, I offer my perspective to the viewer.”
Jewelry artist, Nell Chandler felt inspired to dig deeper into new techniques such as etched metal impressions on polymer clay, Prisma colored pencils on copper, and torch enameling. “I wanted to push myself to try to combine these techniques to make jewelry that reflected the common ground of these seemingly different styles.”
Painter, Michele Yellin writes, “In life, what interests me most is finding … a meeting of the minds and hearts with others. I create work as an expression of my own inner and outer life. Once I put it out in the world, I am interested in other people connecting with and finding that what I paint, is part of their lives as well.
Evelyn Ward is showing a selection of her twice-fired stoneware pottery; the decoration integrates representations of local native plants. Ward writes: “I enjoy making good useful pots that someone will enjoy using every day.”

Trilogy @ Hillsborough Gallery of Arts
Sep 25 – Oct 21 all-day

The voices of three artists Alice Levinson, Michael Salemi, and Mary Lansman tell a story of creativity across three mediums: fabric, wood, and paint. September 24 – October 21. Opening reception during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk, September 28th 6-9pm.
Alice Levinson writes, “In creating my sewn textiles, I use three key components: cloth, thread, and needle. Starting with white cloth, I experiment freely with dye, pigments, and printing techniques to create cloth which is complex in texture and rich in visual interest. The resulting cloth is the primary prompt to my compositions.
Wood-turner Michael Salemi writes, “A trilogy is a three-part story. For this show, I decided to create a series of stories in wood comprised of sets of three—three female statues in white and black, three square-rim bowls in different woods, three plates with a lamination pattern repeated once, twice and then three times. Each of these stories that I’ve told in wood varies in color, size, or pattern. Working in threes has been a fun challenge and I hope those who see the show share my enthusiasm.”

Painter Marcy Lansman writes of her new work, “What I’m most excited about right now is that flowers have found their way back into my paintings. Flowers are where I started – very realistic watercolor flowers. During the past few years I have drifted away from them. My paintings have become quite abstract – pulled more from my imagination than from the outside world. Then just recently, flowers have re-appeared. This time they are not painted flowers, but flowers I’ve photographed and collaged into otherwise abstract paintings. So far they’re sitting there very quietly, almost hidden. But who knows what may happen next?”
